It stars Rajinikanth, R. Madhavan, J. Livingston and Amala Paul in the lead roles. The film is based on Ramu's (a.k.a. Adithya) novel Rajamanikyam, which was published in 2006. It is the ninth collaboration between the lead pair after Aadukalam (2003). The film began its shooting in late March 2009. It released on 16 May 2010. Plot Rajamanikyam is a story about an orphan, Rajamanikyam (J. Livingston) a small-time dealer of illegal cigarettes, who seeks to avenge the wrongs done to his family. The film starts when he is summoned by the village MLA, Sivaprakasam (Manivannan), for the purpose of settling a criminal case that involves a corrupt police officer, Inspector Pazhani (R. Madhavan). Pazhani is the man responsible for the death of Rajamanikyam's father, Shankar (V. Ravichandran), the former police inspector, who has been accused of accepting bribes. Rajamanikyam is a proud son who does not want to do any favors for the people in power. He is quite vocal about it and this becomes a problem when he is arrested for violence and sentenced to three years in prison. During his incarceration, he learns that the police officer is involved in the corruption and tries to avenge the death of his father, Shankar. Meanwhile, Krishnan (Rajinikanth), a young man from a rich family, gets in touch with the police officer in order to help him get rid of his crooked brother, Muthusamy (A. K. Lohithadas), a famous singer who is the owner of the corporation Muthusamy Entertainment and Rajamanikyam is not going to let Krishnan have his way. He does not want Krishnan to interfere in his business of illicit cigarettes, as he does not know whether Krishnan himself is corrupted or not. He reluctantly agrees to help Krishnan and they hatch a plan for revenge. The chief antagonist of the story is the village's Communist leader, Goundam (Sarathkumar), who is against the corruption and is against Rajamanikyam's methods of retaliation, Krishnan and Sivaprakasam.
